From Lawrence Academy

Lawrence Academy, a coeducational independent boarding school for 400 boarding and day students in grades 9 through 12, is located in Groton, Massachusetts. Our mission focuses on recognizing students for who they are; inspiring them to take responsibility for who they want to become, and empowering them to take action for the greater good. LA prides itself on a compassionate culture. Individualized learning and empowerment is a cornerstone of our program; a focus that extends beyond the classroom to athletics, the arts, clubs, community service, and experiential learning (via our Winterim program). Skilled at “teaching for understanding,” faculty use innovative methods to help students learn in the way best suited for them. The daily Advisory system uses student needs and passions to help build pathways to individual goals and aspirations. We seek to see students grow in knowledge, confidence, and empathy; able to make a meaningful contribution to the world once they leave our campus.

My daughter is finishing up her freshman year at Lawrence and has really had an amazing experience! She has loved her classes and teachers and has been involved in both the theater and athletic programs at the school. She has joined a variety of clubs and is a Tour guide. The school has exceeded our expectations. The teachers and administrators are kind and caring, the student body has been welcoming and the extra curriculars have been outstanding.
The school led by the Heed of School Dan Schiebe has been outstanding with regard to the COVID-19 situation. All of his communication has been thoughtful and timely. He has encouraged all of the students to take away something positive from the experience and has stressed resilience in his communications and in the spring curriculum. As a parent I have felt welcome at the school and encouraged to join various parent committees that have enriched my experience and allowed me to see first hand what an amazing place Lawrence Academy is!

Like all schools, LA is what you make of it. However, LA is special because the teachers, staff and administration give students so many opportunities to succeed - they don't give up! Each student has a trusted adult on the LA campus - teacher, advisor, coach, house parent - to talk to and confide in. The twice monthly Comment Cards provide students and their parents with a built in feedback system. College counseling - outstanding! Their staff is full time, well staffed and engaged with each student from the beginning. Soft intro in 9th, testing review throughout the 10th. Parents receive a detailed monthly newsletter (and lots of helpful links) through Decision Day in your child's senior year. Bonus -summer bootcamp to familiarize students with the Common App, review essay prompts and rough drafts, and college interview skills and do's and don'ts.
M son is a 4 year student who has had a FANTASTIC experience at LA. He has learned to study, organize his time, and request help when needed. He was NOT an easy adolescent but LA was always kind and supportive. He got in ED to a great college and we are HAPPY with the LA experience and community! I have especially loved getting to know his friends who are an amazing group of kids.
