As an resident I'm giving 5 stars because is a public school. LO is a bubble of mostly White entitled wealthy nuclear families. The baggage that comes with this demographic is a lack of a DEI, respect for non-Whites, a herd mentality when it comes to course rigor, ECs, volunteerism, community service. If you want your kid to get into Stanford or an Ivy, they either need to be a State Champion recruited athlete, have a razor sharp spike they curated on their own, or just eff-ing brilliant. There is severe grade inflation and everything thinks they will get into a great college until they apply. <2% get into Ivys and Elites. 2/3rds matriculate into Oregon colleges. I you want your kid to get into a top college, send them to private school. LOHS is not a feeder school like elite private boarding schools. If you have $$$$ million to live here and don't want your kid to settle for Oregon State or U of O, ship them out. I see plenty of RangeRovers and G-Wagons with Ducks/Beavers stickers.
The academics are phenomenal all around. A lot of access to technology and equipment relative to most schools. The community is not very diverse though, and it shows. A lot of people in this school seem the same. White, rich, and athletic. Athletic and art funding is not balanced. The school is making improvements on social issues. But the social issues are mainly a cause of the people in the community, not the school itself.
I would make this 3.5 stars if I could, but I rounded up to 4. The main factor that attracts parents to enroll their children is the academics. While it is true that the academics are extremely proficient at prepping students for college, this does not mean that the school is without fault. My main issue is the lack of diversity. There have been multiple racist incidents at the Junior High as well as the High School, and in my opinion there was not enough action on the staff's part to combat these occurrences. However, in general, the staff is very helpful with problems that aren't too serious. I have been very lucky in getting teachers who truly care about kids. There are countless sports and club opportunities which positively impacts the school culture. However, if you are not in the right social group, you can feel left out. The music program is declining, but I personally loved it. The academic work is extremely vigorous, so choose your classes wisely to stay emotionally stable.
