My experience at La Vergne High School was a huge hit or miss at moments. Most of my grips reflect on some of the harsh rules that were enacted while I was in attendance. Not being able to use the restroom during odd periods was a flat out absurd rule. Paying to go to a pep rally completely destroyed my school spirit and, honestly, did not make want to go to the school games. On the brighter side of things, the community we had developed was absolutely beautiful. It was amazing to see students feel safe enough to be able to hang pride flags off their backpacks and be brazenly their selves. We felt mostly accepted by the school populace. Academics could be a big hit or miss. The Associate's degree program offers advanced students a head start in life and that extra challenge they may need. Club Interact was also a fantastic club that helped students find their footing in their community. Overall, it was average just because some of the harsh rules killed many High School experiences.
Though the school may not have the best resources, through no fault of their own since their funding is scarce, it still provides its students with tremendous opportunities. The greatest one being Dual Enrollment through Motlow State Community College. Students pay a fraction of what it would cost to attain the same credits after high school and can earn up to an Associate Degree. Up until junior year, classes are not challenging; however, if a student chooses not to do Dual Enrollment, the rigor does not increase. One of the best things about LHS, besides DE, is its diversity. LHS is full of people from different cultures and even allows students time to educate each other on their heritage through school wide presentations. Although the school may come with many advantages, the school itself could use an update on the inside. Most funding, I assume, goes to sports and beautification of the outside of the school based on the state of the inside.
Overall, I'd say my experience at La Vergne High School was good. The school has an incredibly diverse community that reflects the town around it, and I can't recall having a teacher who didn't seem to have my best interests at heart.
That being said, I think there's still a lot of room for improvement. The administration often came off as lazy, and often put their focus on the wrong things. An example of this is prioritizing sports over the arts department. The theatre department, for instance, was drastically underfunded despite the potential and talent of the students within it.
Despite this, I do think the school has a lot of potential. Most of the staff was very delightful to work with, and a fair few were essential to helping me prepare for post-high school education when I was struggling with mental health issues. I've had some of the most memorable and kind teachers there, and I think my memories of LHS are more fond than not.
