the art department has amazing resources and will make you ready to apply to art college BUT
I'm sure everyone knows that one furry artist who doodles a lot but it all looks bad. You can tell they want to beat out this type of person. As a person who really enjoyed illustration, but wasn't good at at first, I found the program demotivating. I remember during portfolio review, one of my teachers saw a a character turnaround in my journal, and it wasn't an assignment, just something i did for fun; He told me, an insecure 14yo, "you should do less of this". The visual arts program is encouraging of exploration for every medium but illustration. I admit, I definitely wasn't the best at illustration my first 2 years, but I only improved when I gathered the courage to start practicing in spite of their unconstructive criticism. My art is like, good, now! I wish they gave me this space, and some CONSTRUCTIVE advice from the start. Im not the only illustrator in the dept with this experience

I am a student at this school and I have to say that I love it. All the teachers are involved with the students and the subject they teach. They offer the best of the best education and are always willing to help us. The environment is nice because everyone is friendly and open-minded. You can make a friend easily because a lot of people are very outgoing. They have lots of opportunities for college readiness like fairs and talks, etc... It is a safe environment and the administration is amazing. They care for each and every student and make an effort to know as many students by name and try to get to know them. The resources and facilities are the best especially concerning out art areas. They give a plethora of instruments and great teachers and consultants so we can excel not only in academics but also in the arts. Everyone is an active member of this school including parents and teachers who love to help out, and students who make the place extraordinary! This is a 5-star school.
What I love most about HSPVA is how it’s such a unique community of artists. Everyone who goes to this school comes here to make art, and the uplifting atmosphere that is found here is something that you can’t find anywhere else! In my department, Theatre, the amazing staff/teachers individualize our learning experience so we can grow and have breakthroughs onstage. I can personally say I have learned so much about my craft and become a better performer because of them, and I'm so thankful for that. Coming to HSPVA was a blessing for me and I’m thankful every day that I have such great opportunities not only to create art but also go to a school that embraces everyone.
