I'm in the STEM academy at kenwood high school. My experiences can be seen as a downward spiral since freshman year. My freshman year we had Dr.Dickey as the engineering teacher and our core classes were STEM only. The proceeding year Dr.Dickey left and was replaced by Mr.Makowski, a man with no STEM background, our robotics year was spent doing presentations on robotics instead of building them, something we had looked forward to all freshman year. Our sophomore year we still had integrated core classes. As we transitioned in to our junior they announced there would no longer be core integrated classes, which was a large reason of why people joined. For our junior year we took Digital electronics with Mr.Martin, which was pleasant as it was hands on. All this year we heard stories of Mr.Makowski until we came back after christmas and they had rotating subs. Those subs had no lesson plans either. Thankfully our senior seem to be off to a good start with new STEM instructors.
Review Kenwood High School
I have been at Kenwood High School for four years. I have been a part of the STEM academy there the whole time. I had to take a class during the summer to join, but it was well worth it because I was able to take all of the honors and AP classes I wanted. It has always been given a bad rep because of its diversity. For the past three years we were unable to listen to music outside of instructional time. Every year, although this might not be right to say, there are always a couple of fights at the very beginning of the year. As far as I know, it is the same in every school. But, this year, my last year, has been the best year of school in my entire life. They have finally allowed us to listen to music outside of instructional time. I did plenty of research on how music affects and improves brain function. Finally, we are given a bit of freedom and this musical oasis is making my year so much better.
Kenwood High School is a great school if you want to learn. The teachers are committed to making their students pass, giving them every opportunity available to get the highest grade possible. The administration cares about the students and want to see us all succeed in life after we graduate. We have a high graduation rate, and the school is really like one big family. No child is truly left behind at Kenwood.
