After spending the summer with our son, who completed his first year at Kent, I can undoubtedly say sending him to Kent was one of the best decisions our family has made regarding parenting. From the moment he stepped on the campus, he knew this was his new 'home'. He was challenged academically, socially, and athletically. He left our home well mannered and respectful. He returned with those values still in place but enhanced with gratitude and empathy. It was the little things like offering to help load the car or engaging in meaningful conversation with family and adults that stood out to me this summer. He's matured in a way that lets me know that the values we've instilled in him are being nurtured and expanded upon thanks to the Kent community. While he enjoyed his time home for summer break, I can tell he's eager to return to Kent for what we all know will be another year of growth and happiness.
Our daughter is just finishing up her first year at Kent and Kent has definitely brought out the best in her. The faculty, staff and students are so warm and welcoming. Everyone seems to treat each other with respect. The campus, bordered by the Housatonic River on one side and the Appalachian Trail on the other side, is simply gorgeous. Classes have been academically challenging, but whenever our daughter has had any difficulty understanding something, the faculty have been available outside of class to provide extra help. We selected Kent over a higher ranked school because Kent seemed like a better "fit" and have no regrets.
Kent School is not for everyone. Compared to public schools, the faculty are incredibly engaged in their classrooms and are often willing to sacrifice their time to help a student who feels they are struggling. Kent School implements a concept wherein staff members/faculty (collectively staffulty) exist in more than one roll. For example, teachers are often Dorm Parents and coaches, allowing for more comfortable relationship building as it is more difficult to do something new without knowing at least one person. Kent is more than willing to tell you about their "incredible academic programs and extracurricular activities," therefore I will not waste your time. While Kent is not perfect in any way, it will offer a challenge to students who wish to push their limits to the extreme (albeit through their needing to figure out how to be successful by themselves).
