From John Burroughs School

Burroughs is an independent, college preparatory school (grades 7-12). Twenty-eight seniors in the Class of 2021 are National Merit semifinalists.

A core curriculum in humanities and STEM is balanced by opportunities in athletics and in the fine, practical, and performing arts. Students engage in more than four dozen clubs, from a high-mileage vehicle club to a literary magazine.

The school puts a premium on global awareness and cultural competency, service and sustainability, and ethics.

The Drey Land Experience

Drey Land, the school’s wilderness camp in the Ozarks, is a valuable resource for orientation programs, biology field research, outdoor education and service outings. The Burroughs community has built and maintained most of the facilities, including cabins, a pavilion and a main lodge. Faculty and students have also cleared miles of trail and have been acknowledged by the National Park Service.

As a parent of two students, I can tell you that this is a fantastic and nurturing institution … not just because it is one of the top college prep schools, but the culture is what makes it special. My kids moved there from an excellent public school but in less than a year, they are flourishing. They love learning and look forward to school. JBS makes learning fun and desirable. What is really interesting is that despite the academic rigor and how challenging JBS is, my kids look forward to school everyday. They have become more curious, kinder, and have a renewed desire to learn. As opposed to learning and academia being a chore, JBS has made them realize that learning is cool! The sport requirement makes the students integrate so well with their peers and puts their health to the forefront. They learn to be polite and are considerate. The teachers and counselors care about their wellbeing. JBS is a gem. If it was a coastal school it would be top 10 which is where it belongs.

John Burroughs is an excellent school and on the whole I have enjoyed my time there. The campus and facilities are beautiful and modern, and the general environment is welcoming and friendly. Classes are small (typically around fifteen students) making it easy for students to connect with their teachers personally. Classes of different difficulties are offered, but all classes are designed to prepare you for college. One of the things I love most about Burroughs is that I always feel appropriately challenged in my classes. In terms of racial diversity, I would say Burroughs does pretty well and the percentage of students of color is only improving. The one area I see Burroughs fall short is economic diversity: tuition and expenses are understandably high to support the high quality of education, but only one in four students receive financial assistance from the school, giving the school a somewhat elitist feeling. That being said, I am truly grateful for my experience at Burroughs.

Burroughs has a great community that really feels like one big family. I started at Burroughs in seventh grade, and in the past five years I've made so many friends and had so many opportunities to learn and get out of my comfort zone. I would absolutely recommend that anyone who's interested in taking their academics, arts, or other passions to the next level come to Burroughs and succeed under great mentorship!
