I've had a pretty good experience. I've met so many great people that are my best friends at Joel Barlow High School. For the most part it is a good education.
This school is known for its English department, but I've found that it works best for kids that already have certain aptitude in writing. It really depends on the teacher, but some will give you really vague and ultimately unhelpful advice when it comes to editing an essay. That being said, the writing center is a very useful resource, and most teachers will do their best to give helpful feedback.
Some good teachers, not very good support, but overall good school with good academics and good people.
Administration needs to listen and enact change when asking students on how to improve the school. That being said, their academics are strong.
I would recommend Barlow to anyone who is looking for an academically challenging school with a close and friendly community. Overall, I had a good experience at Barlow. For the most part, I liked my teachers, my classes were engaging, and I was given many opportunities to succeed. Yet, despite these positives, the students at Barlow are always very stressed; as each course requires a lot of time and effort. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Barlow and think that the positives outweigh the negatives.
I love the smaller interactive class sizes and resources given to me everyday. I feel well prepared going into my senior year and look forward to college in the future. Sports activities are manageable and work well with my schedule.
Excellent School. Staff is very supportive and always there to answer any question .Teachers are great always there when you need help. we love Joel Barlow High School and have had nothing but a good experience here with our kids. Great Teachers and peers, an we feel that all the kids are equal. The staff cares deeply about each individual child and helping every learner find their path and be confident learners and leaders. We fell as though children are safe, loved and being prepare for the future scholastically and socially. The staff truly cares for the students and helps them develop into the best they can be. The most helpful information about the quality of the school was the support and guid in building a strong portfolio for college. The school counselors are always there to help. they helped with their advice and suggestions about which colleges to apply for , we might have missed out on so many wonderful possibilities.
Great teachers who challenge you academically. After graduating and going to college I found that my academic experience at Joel Barlow high school prepared me very well.
I loved Joel Barlow High-School. I found it to be an enriching experience, and I became close with many of my teachers. My only complaint about the high-school pertains to the math department. Some of the polices and teachers in the math department are unfair, causing Barlow students to struggle in math. Besides this, Barlow is an amazing school and really set me up for my future at an accredited University.
The engineering department at Barlow is pretty good, mostly due to the First Robotics Team. If you are interested in STEM Barlow is a great choice due to this. We compete with teams around the country after a 6-10 week build season starting in January. It has taught me more than I could ever learn in a classroom setting, even in a specialized school. On top of this Barlow's academics are rigorous, and teachers are receptive to students needs on top of this.
The academics at Joel Barlow are very good and definitely prepares you for college. Most of the teachers are extremely helpful and want to see you succeed. I would say the changes I want to see most are in the classes offered, allowing underclassmen to take APs, and more school spirit.
The academic curriculum is extremely rigorous, leaving a minimal amount of time to do other activities that I enjoy.
Excels in preparing students for college as well as future careers, and has teachers that do everything they can to help students meet their academic goals. The only problem, if you can call it that, is that with a more rigorous/hard curriculum comes heavy homework loads and frequent assessments. It is also, I assume because of the location, not very diverse.
Barlow provides its students with a wonderful education. It sets its standards high while also allowing the students to have a break once in a awhile. If I was to change one thing about it I would ask for more school spirit.
I moved from Trumbull Highschool to Joel Barlow during the middle of my sophomore year of high school. The overall comfort and openness i experienced from this school was overwhelming. The academics are really good and since the grades are small, all the people are very close to one another. Although they are very strict
It is a really difficult school and takes a lot of hard work. Everybody knows everybody, so the drama can grow large as well. Be prepared for you limits to be tested.
Barlow is very focused on academics but does not have a lot of school spirit. It is very easy to get to and from the school grounds. They have a nice track and turf field for sports.
