Newman is a small private school with a high tuition cost, and because of that, diversity is lacking. But that comes with the territory, and you would face this issue at any private school in Nola. That being said, as a woman of color, I have always felt safe and cared for here, as they does their best to encourage diversity and inclusion.
(let it be known that POC students at Newman have very different experiences and the same can't be said for everyone)
On the other hand, the school offers amazing opportunities and great academics for students. It's a community in every sense of the word, helping students build relationships and achieve academic excellence with the guidance of their teachers. Each student can feel individually supported and inspired to do their best, and even though Newman isn't perfect, the positives out weigh the negatives by a lot, and compared to other schools in New Orleans, I'm confident in saying that this is the best. ( i might be a bit biased tho)

The academics, resources and facilities are for the most part, exceptional. College preparation aside, what lacks most is the connection and friendship that lasts well beyond high school graduation. There are a maybe a handful of students who are engaging and truly possess qualities and values that other students can follow. There are just very few exceptional role models in the peer group. There are a lot of 'shoe gazers' here, as well as kids who seem bored with everything and fail to see the opportunities laid before them. Lots of entitlement. Also, there seem to be very few students who possess the 'fire in the belly' passion to succeed and to contribute to the world. Most seem to expect everything to be handed to them. And I think values like 'work ethic' and understanding that hard work is usually the only way to success are lost on most of them. I don't know what the school could do differently, but know that this is the culture your student will live in.
I truly enjoy attending school here because of the various opportunities present and my peers. I also love the student teacher ratio and the availability and willingness the teachers have to work with students one on one.
