Like most comments stated, the teachers picked favorites. I'm going to be completely honest here, they're not wrong. But that's not all that makes the school bad. For example, the school doesn't really teach much about topics you'll need for H.S, which is important. I personally believe that there aren't enough extra-curriculum classes, and the grading system is wack. I just don't think it's fair for your newest grade to count for 65% of your average, and how the last grade of a student can drag the average down if it's not so good, even though the student exceeded in most of their past assignments. The reason why I didn't rate the school a 1 star is because the school itself is pretty clean and organized. Also, I was kinda favorited by one of my teachers.
The school is actually quite good despite what the reviews say. The school is challenging in its own aspects, provide a good academic community, but the teachers are incredibly biased in terms of politics and often if not always inject themselves in political arguments in classes, and tend to side with more liberals than conservatives. But it is New York.
I like IS 289 because of the advisory, PE, Recess, Music classes, and of course the people in there. I made many good friends. One thing that can improve the school is by letting 6th graders be able to have outdoor lunch.
