The International Academy of Macomb taught me many lessons that I will use throughout my life. The school itself has an atmosphere like none other as it feels like one big family. Due to the size of the school being about 400 people total, everyone gets to know each other well, especially with the relationships with the teachers. The connections we make will help ease our future endeavors as everyone will support you. The school is also very diverse with lots of cultures as it is the largest magnet school in Michigan. Diversity is important in a school as this will bring different cultures and ethnicities together overall strengthening the student body. Some improvements that the school should make are the various items that the school uses its budget to buy. For example wooden flooring on a section of the school rather than the entire school and locks on doors that become useless. Overall, the school is excellent with the best academics and diverse culture. I'm happy I attended!
I'm currently a senior at the International Academy of Macomb and my experience there at November 1, 2022 has been colorful. Like every school, there's ups and downs: the heavy workload, the community, and the opportunities that being a student provides. As a student there, you undergo a rigorous cirriculum that forces students who flew by in middle school to learn to study efficiently and effectively to succeed which gradually improves your general academic skills. Moreover, the IAM has a unique community-- class sizes are smaller than in other schools and students bond with other classmates over our difficult classes. But there's limited clubs, there's no sports, limited field trips, and smaller events. There are a few traditions, like Winter Olympics and Field Day, but not much. I think the school is worth it, though, because of the opportunities it provides. Many universities recognize the IAM, or the IB program, which can provide credits for colleges, as well. It's something...
The teachers are either amazing or pretty good, with very few exceptions! The size of the school allows for students to develop meaningful relationships with teachers, and they're always really supportive. Speaking of support, the student environment is unparalleled. Students learn to work together and underclassmen are usually heavily supported and guided by the upperclassmen. The clubs are easy to set up and vary widely in options, so there's something for everyone (and if there's not, you can just make a club)! I will say that the environment is extremely stressful for freshmen and juniors, but not impossible to accomplish. It's a challenge! The biggest thing I could hope for is a wider range of available subjects, or more freedom to pick our IB courses, because the school, despite being a liberal arts high school, leans heavily into History and Literature as mandatory courses and leaves STEM students with limited options to explore. Otherwise, it's a really good school!
