Indian River High School Reviews
Rating 3.69 out of 5 372 reviews
I loved my experience at Indian River! I was a student all four years. Not all of the teachers are great, but some, in particular, are very good at what they do (absolute gems). There are not as many opportunities at this school as much as you could find at other high schools in Chesapeake, namely Grassfield, but it has a decent amount of AP classes you can take. Our school has the AVID program for B/C average students, Grassfield is the nicest all-round and has an academy there for Business, Technology, and Engineering, but Oscar Smith has the IB program (great for preparing for college), Deep Creek has the Science and Medicine program (not sure how good it actually is but probably looks good on a resume for pre-med). The school is in good condition being renovated just a few years ago. Clubs and activities are there, you just have to ask for some help. Overall good experience, but not the best school in the area if you're looking for somewhere with academic prestige.
To sum up the best and worst experiences I’ve had at Indian River High School; It has been great overall. Despite Covid restrictions and virtual learning, I still managed to make friends. Also, I felt that most of my teachers have been quite receptive to me and other students in terms of our needs, being able to help us when we needed extra help. There haven’t been that many bad experiences for me. The that I’ve had haven’t too bad compared to what could be. I such bad experience, which I know other schools are experiencing are problems with vapes and smoking weed. Other that, there aren’t any other bad experiences I believe are worth mentioning. Some things that I wished were changed at Indian River High School would be offering more extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs, which could include lacrosse, rowing badminton. Another thing is like to see changes would be for the school to install more water refill stations throughout the school.
Indian River is a very diverse school, having students from many school districts that all fit into the school zone, bringing together many kids of people with all different backgrounds and lifestyles. The school is more-so open to all nationalities and ethnicities, but like all schools there have been racial and inclusivity issues, which still continues today. It is primarily between students, not from the staff as I feel that they are very involved and care about our lives as students in the school and what will come for us after we finish high school. There were times where I did feel unsafe because of violence among students and the lengths that teachers and staff had to go to in order to stop any attacks or fights in the school. It was a very lively school, like any other. Security and surveillance of the students reached great lengths with the new system of logging in when one needed to use the restroom to reduce "too many" students in one bathroom. Diverse, but needs to improve.
