It has very good staff, who care for their students and teach well. The school is kept very clean too. Independence also happens to have a variety of extracurricular options, with directors who lead the students to success more often than not. But on the other side of the spectrum, the school could do better with its upkeeping. It could also show some more support to its music and art-related programs. The students themselves could be more accepting of each other to help make the overall feel of the environment better.
Independence provides a wide variety of opportunities for students. The class selection is decent for a school of their size. They don’t offer many advanced courses but they offer plenty of courses - especially in math - for those who may struggle in school more. The music programs at Independence ware some of the best in the state. They compete nationally. The athletics are decent year to year, with some years being more successful than others. Overall, the school meets the necessary needs of their students.
My high school experience at Independence Jr/Sr High School was mediocre at best. The actual school building is very nice, as it was only built about 6 years ago. It has great sports facilities, a big gym, and a nice weight and wrestling room. Independence has one of the best music programs out of the state of Iowa. Education-wise, I would say Independence is average if not lacking a little. The school's English program is great due to the teachers, who have been teaching at Independence for years. The history and math programs are fairly good, but what determines it is who you have as a teacher. Independence's science program is extremely poor. So overall, Independence is an okay school but it is definitely overdue for some improvement. If I could change one thing about Independence Jr/Sr High School, it would be how teachers are hired. Independence tends to higher people straight out of college or people who are friends with a member of the school board.
