From Incarnate Word Academy
In 1873, a group of Incarnate Word sisters established an all-girls, Catholic high school in downtown Houston on the corner of Crawford and Capitol Street. Nearly 150 years later, the Academy they founded continues to prepare hundreds of young women for success in college and beyond.
We prepare students to be Women of the Word through a rigorous college-preparatory education rooted in Academics, Values, and Spirituality. My experience at Incarnate Word Academy has been amazing. We are a small, all-girl, and Catholic High School in downtown Houston. The teachers here have the highest degrees in their field and have a passion for teaching. They work with you and will take the time to help you with what you need help with. We have many honor and AP classes, which I have taken a few, and the classes are absolutely amazing. There are no boys here at our school but that is what brings the students closer together. We are a small school, with 400 students in total, the students are really close; whether, it is in sports, clubs, or in classrooms. I have been in Cross Country and Track here since freshman year. Even though our team is small compared to other schools, we always place top 10 at state. We have the best coaches, they played in college and Coach the sport here! Incarnate Word Academy has brought me many friends and has opened up many opportunities for me.
IWA was my first choice for high school and I absolutely do not regret it! I absolutely love the girls in my class. Our classes and teachers are absolutely incredible. The girls all bond quickly together and the sisterhood is unlike any other. A bond you won’t get at any other high school! I am and always will be grateful for Incarnate Word Academy!
Dress code trumps everything here. Dean has walked in on multiple of my classes daily, which is distracting and unnecessary. Also, Administration and student communication is poor, if you reach out with an issue you will likely never get any help or even response. Head nun Beck fails to allow any sort of comfortable environment and often puts her strict dress code enforcement over anything, including academics. Also, on the subject of academics, some classes are simply not effective in teaching and do not adapt to different learning styles. However does prepare you for college and some classes are actually good.
