Overall I have had a great experience academically in my five years at IDEA McAllen College Preparatory due to having teachers who were very skilled and knowledgeable in their subject and are always willing to help any student without judgement when they have a concern or question. Counselors both academic and emotional are as well very obliging when we have questions about universities. IDEA McAllen is very open at letting organizations and clubs ran by students form. Important forms like Letters of Recommendation given to teachers are completed by a deadline given by student. In contrast, organizational skills can improve by letting students and teachers be aware of school activities and changed schedules by letting teachers know of what will occur during school. Athletics can as well improve when school expands and has more space for sports like football and track and space to build new facilities.

My school has helped me so much to when it comes to academics, college applications and choosing the right college. They have assisted me in free ACT tutoring and have given me multiple opportunities to take the ACT. They have also prepared me for college by offering me AP and IB courses to challenge me and to get an idea on what college is. Not only have they offered me academic help they have also offered visual and performing arts activities for every kid in the school. I was able to join the visual arts club and the Theater Club. I believe this is a great school for a kid, although take into consideration that the school is preparing the child for college, so rigorous work will be given. In the end, all the school's help and support for the student are so worth it when applying and going through college.
IDEA McAllen is a campus that has formed a culture like no other. The principal, Joan Alvarez knows what it’s like to make it to college and has enstilled that same drive in his students from a young age. This campus never fails to outperform academically. However, with every great effort is a great sacrifice—it’s student body culture and spirit. With all these expectations and heavy responsibilities of a college prep. student it leaves very little room for student involvement throught the campus. This was a very major problem to me as a student and even as a Senior. The administration’s presence feels overwhelming and at times unreasonable with subtle aspects of a high school such as lunch, transitions between classes, and class registration. Do not let the cons discourage you if academics are a top priority, nevertheless keep in mind what is written above, both positive and negative. I hope you can find my insight useful.
