I can't say enough amazing things about this school! My son struggled in public schools missing assignments, low grades, boredom, issues with teachers, administrators. We chose Huntington-Surrey his Freshman year & it was the best decision ever. The school and teachers are engaging - making the lessons interesting with Socratic methods and especially working with students individually with finding out how they learn best. My son has achieved so much there and excited to learn. He has A's & B's and is obviously college ready because he has been in ACC dual credit classes during his senior year doing great. He received an A on his first college essay! He was the only one in the class of mostly adults that scored an A. It was something like 8 pages too which is incredible for a kid who doesn't enjoy writing. It is all because Huntington-Surrey teachers and the Director prepared him throughout the years. The math there is superb too. No one falls behind or through the cracks.
Huntington Surrey does a great job in teaching the whole teen, letting them be heard and helping them chart their course. A small high school, it has class sizes of 6-8 kids, allowing the students to ALWAYS be a part of the conversation.
We found Huntington-Surrey after attending 2 start-up schools. I love the idea of the innovation of a new school but we eventually realized that you DON'T want your kid going through those growing pains. Leadership, teachers & curriculum changed several times & we were never sure they would stay open. We realized we needed STABILITY + flexibility. Huntington-Surrey is just that. The teachers have infectious passion and even though they were established many decades ago they are still innovative. The academics are rigorous enough that my "gifted" son feels stimulated but the work load is reasonable. Classes are small (2-8) so they have great discussions. And very importantly they were willing to make accomodations for his dyslexia, dysgraphia & ADHD. They that even though my kid is smart his brain learns a little differently than most which is great. Overall we're very happy with the school!
Great staff who work hard to understand and tailor to the student's needs. There is a great culture of acceptance and students can be themselves and not feel a need to conform to a standard. Thank you Huntington Surrey - you have been a great support to my son.
Huntington-Surrey was such an amazing school for our oldest child that our youngest just started there as a freshman. If your child is struggling to find their academic interests in a larger school and would benefit from smaller classes with enthusiastic, well-trained teachers, Huntington-Surrey may be the place for them.
HS is a wonderful small private high school. It is a wonderful option for those needing a different experience than the massive public high schools in Austin or the high-stress, high expense private schools in the area. The staff genuinely cares about each student and the kids are kind.
The school is settling into its new home at the Unitarian Church after moving in 2019. The students love the space. Teachers are very good and have more flexibility than the ones in the public schools to find innovative ways to teach. They are trying to improve parent involvement and communication which will be a big help.
Overall, the admin team in devoted to continuing to improving this school , making it even more of a caring community for those who don't feel a large school is a good fit for them.

My son has gone here for 4 years. Public school did not work for him. Small class sizes, ability to work with twice exceptional kids and anti-bullying (acceptance no matter what race, sexual orientation, gender, etc were the primary factors in our decision. No regrets.
The mission and passion that Huntington-Surrey has for students surpasses every other school I have experienced. We are a safe place for beautifully unique minds to come and learn and explore life, without the pressure and high stress levels of a standard school setting. Our staff will bend over backwards to make sure our students become the best version of themselves. Our low student:teacher ratio and our individualized curriculum allows us to meet each student where they are, and help them build up their education on a strong foundation. We are more than a school; we are a family. If you are looking for a place that sees your student as a whole child, then look no further!
Excellent, highly-qualified educators in a supportive environment. My son loves attending school! Truly a hidden gem in Austin, Texas. Highly recommend to parents desiring a phenomenal education for their child.
