Howard W. Blake High School & Magnet Program Reviews
Rating 3.66 out of 5 541 reviews
I am a Journalism major here at Blake so I get to see it all. Although our program is under funded, we do our best to keep it alive. There is an entire new staff this 22-23 school year and they have been very good and a lot of new rules have been reinforced. Though these new rules are much more strict than what we are normally used to, it has definitely changed the school for the better. Throughout my senior year, I have received lots of help from faculty and they are leading me into the right direction as I start my college journey. I’ve met the best of friends at this school and have gotten loads of opportunities handed to me. Overall great school and only getting better!
Being apart of the magnet program is a unique experience that no other school in our county has. It is a conservatory-like environment that builds teamwork and personal skills. One of my best experiences is performing for a concert called Night of Jazz where I got to sing with a live band filled with people I had worked with the whole school year. Adding to this the chorus program that I am involved in often brings me great experience that make me feel like I have a school family. A downside is that as a Christian, I rarely meet others that have the same faith as me but instead have encounters with those who oppose my faith. Although I have had some trials because of this, I have been presented with many opportunities to share my faith with those that know nothing about it. Overall, something that I would like to see change is the depth of advising as I often feel like some of the counselors and teachers don't really put in the work to see their students succeed.
My experience at Howard W. Blake High School has been a roller coaster. I’ve gone to having no teacher in a spam of 3 days to having so many experiences and opportunities regarding my future. I personally believe that being a dance major will help me in the future. It has opened me to so many opportunities that will look good in my resume, but at the same time has helped me grow as a dancer. Even though the school hasn’t been the best, it hasn’t done me wrong just yet. I’m part of Student Government Association because I want to better my school. You even could say I’m seeing a change in the school pride and how the students perceived the school. Howard W. Blake High School has it’s ups and downs, but you just have to learn how to navigate through the systems.
