My husband and I have had both of our boys in Germantown Schools starting in the elementary years. We loved the Elementary schools, but we noticed academics slipping in Houston Middle for our oldest and have noticed them slip even further at Houston High. So much so that we've had to use supplemental materials and hire a tutor to make sure he's ready for college. What started in Middle School worsened at Houston High with a focus on controversial social issues rather than academics. Houston High has fallen prey to the "multiple gender" ideology with a sign that reads "All genders welcome!" when you enter the school (and it's not just referencing male/female). When my child went to sign up for the high school play, he noticed the sign-up sheet asked for "preferred pronouns," including "other." The district also spends a lot of time and money on SEL curriculum which uses confusing terms and allows some teachers to insert their personal opinions. We are disappointed - focus on academics!
Houston is one of the hardest academic schools in the area, beating out both public and private schools nearby. They prepare students for college and their future careers. They also bring in professionals in trades to offer information to students interested in trade and technical schools. It is a warming environment with lots of diversity!
Houston High has been a great experience for my three kids. Two have graduated and were/are highly prepared for college, and my third child has so many opportunities available at school. The teachers and administrators are dedicated and easy to communicate with. I’m a parent volunteer and a substitute teacher, so I’m in the building regularly and there is definitely a positive vibe going on!
