I need to give a SHOUTOUT to our local public middle school, George Moses Horton. GMH is AMAZING! The work that the faculty and staff at GMH are doing to educate and support our local youth is both impressive and inspirational!
As a parent, being able to send your child(ren) to a school where you know that they will be safe and nurtured, both academically and emotionally, is a tremendous sense of relief. I cannot adequately express how happy our family has been that we made the difficult decision to take our child out of nationally top-ranked NC charter school, and enroll them at GMH.
As an educator, community member and parent, I encourage everyone to check out all of the awesome things GMH is doing for the youth in our community.

I found my experience at Horton to be terribly stressful and isolating. While middle school years are usually difficult for most American public school students, Horton's teachers, administration, and students did not make it any easier. I found the administration to be biased or absent. The teachers were patronizing to students and their families, which in turn caused students to disrespect the school's staff and faculty and their peers. The drama was so disruptive I found that it took away from my education. The available electives in the arts, language, and other career skills were seriously lacking or non existent. I do not blame any single person for the reputation Horton has as the lesser of the Chatham County middle schools, but rather the community as a whole who did not prioritize the children's education to come first. There were some great teachers that I'll never forget, but unfortunately this does not make up for my personal misfortunes there.
This place will make your kid sad. Find somewhere else. Teachers are condescending and have zero respect for the feelings of any of the humans they teach. It's ridiculous, and it will break your heart as a parent. But things change over time, so maybe things will change here also-- until then, I'd stay away.
