My experience with Hoover High School has been very mixed. Throughout my four years there, I overheard lots of nasty rumor with the students at the school. Although not common, fights occurred from time to time. The classes Hoover had offered me were lacking compared to places such as Central Academy. Hoover doesn't seem to motivate or challenge me hard enough, but when I'm there my life is more relaxed and stress-free. I believe Hoover has some quality points, such as the staff and teachers. My senior year especially, had new staff, who were able to tone the violence down. The counselors and college advisers were able to help me a ton with scheduling and college. If I were to make some changes, it would be to add more classes, such as photography, math, or other courses. I believe a school should emphasize the importance of exploring many career opportunities.
Hoover is an incredibly diverse school, in fact it is the most diverse high school in the state of Iowa. I also feel my teachers have better prepared me for college. Hoover offers counselors and financial aid representatives to help students be both mentally and financially prepared for entering either college, a trade school, or the work force. I've also had many opportunities to talk to my teachers one on one, focusing on where I'd like to take my career path and also how I plan to execute this plan. My teachers have been helpful in motivating me to pursue my interests, and better my talents by seeking opportunities to push me. Aside from the teachers I have gained relationships and friendships with students over the past many years that I won't forget.
Hoover was a very different experience than most schools in the district. We were one of the least populated schools in class 4A in the state but we were the most diverse, whites and blacks were minorities to kids from more than 40 different countries. So it was very different. Athletics was a big part of the reason I open enrolled to that school, Hoover is a basketball powerhouse. Funny thing is I graduated from there as a full time football fanatic and a college scholarship holder.
