Hoopeston Area High School Reviews
Rating 3.28 out of 5 82 reviews
I recently moved to Hoopeston, Illinois from my home in Houston, Texas. I made the decision to stay with my aunt, uncle, and cousins all the while leaving my mom in Houston. It was a very difficult choice beings how she is my best friend. However, I was sure that I wouldn't regret it and that it would all prove to be worth the risk. My experience at Hoopeston Area High School exceeded my expectations. The classes were graciously easier than those in Houston, since they were smaller and more direct. I was grateful for the one on one communication I received from my teachers. Unfortunately for me, they had a school rule that no backpacks were allowed in classrooms and must stay in your lockers. I supposed it was for safety reasonings, but it made it very difficult for me juggling so many books between each class. If I could change this, I would suggest placing metal detectors in the entrances to prevent the idea that a student may pose a threat by having their backpacks with them.
The school offers opportunities that some small schools can’t provide, like a marching band and our new forensics class. We have some sports teams and a music program. We even have a competing show choir and jazz band. You generally don’t have to worry about your safety, and if you really need to, there’s a counselor you can talk to. However, there are several issues I see in the school. the school doesn’t adequately fund the arts or building repairs despite having the budget to. The color guard flags are decades old and there are classrooms where the ceiling is literally falling apart. Occasionally the school puts period products in the girls’ bathrooms, but the tampons are made of cardboard. There’s also a lack of resources for lgbtq+ students and the like.
I think that overall, Hoopeston High School is a great place to receive an education and it gives students a wonderful environment to thrive, grown, and learn. Although it is a great school, I did give 4 stars because there were some troubles finding capable teachers in the past, but all in all that only pushed me to work harder in order to come out on top. I feel that Hoopeston High School has amazing academic programs and teachers, and has exceeded in preparing me for college as much as possible.
