My overall experience at Homestead High School has been a good and bad. The school culture can definitely be improved, along with validation of mental health. The academics that children participate in at Homestead are thoroughly rigorous, but rewarding. The staff at Homestead make it a better place 100%. Many of problems are within the community less of the school. Occasionally this problems will present themselves within the school culture.
The best part about Homestead is the teachers. A lot of there stay for many years and have so much experience with teaching that I genuinely feel like I'm learning the content and future life lessons. The worst part is that it is based in a very wealthy area, so some students are a lot to deal with in good terms. It isn't Homestead's fault though. Something I wish would change is what Homestead invests their spending into. They put a lot of money into their football program, which is great because our team is great! Unfortunately, I sing and put effort into theater and Homestead doesn't focus on that at all. We have a lot of talent as a school and I just wish everyone was given the same chance to show it off.
The best parts of my experience at Homestead High School would be the opportunities it granted me. the high school had a wide variety of different classes that students could explore, and prepped us to be competitive applicants in higher ranking universities. While I am grateful for the academic opportunities the school provided me, I dreaded going to school there because of the students. This was to be expected, growing up as a biracial Chinese-American in a predominantly white high school. Oftentimes I felt targeted by my peers for my cultural upbringing.
Homestead was and is an overall great school. In terms of academics, there is a wide variety of classes that fit your interests. I am currently involved in a lot of medical and health-related classes at school. The AP program and class offerings at this school is diverse. The teachers at Homestead ensure that we are learning in a way that helps everyone understand and feel comfortable with what they are doing. Homestead also provides an "AVID" class which is dedicated to college preparation, being extremely effective to developing organization and skills needed for the future. It's a great academic environment to be in; however, there isn't enough attention being brought to students' culture and safety. There are multiple cases in which students are being bullied for their beliefs and identity; and the administration doesn't do as much as they're supposed to honor those victimized of bullying at school. Other than that, I am proud to be a Highlander at Homestead High School.
As a student at Homestead, my time here has been a range of experiences. Homestead has allowed me to explore my interests in engineering with its various project lead-the-way classes and allowed me to make truly unforgettable memories with its staff.
The classes are very rigorous and well taught. Teachers put above and beyond effort into their teaching.
This school is very academically good. The teachers and students are all so nice and the diversity has gotten better over the years. They give great opportunities for each student and support each path students want to go.
The academics here are undoubtedly excellent, but the administration and overall school culture are lacking. In my experience, the administration is very dismissive of serious issues and seems unaware of the widespread homophobia, transphobia, racism, and ableism in our school. I hear slurs being used in casual conversation almost every day, which is directly against the school policies stated in the handbook.
Nice facilities, safe school, strong athletic teams with great school spirit, strong academics and lots of AP classes offered. Trimester plan is a disadvantage for students taking the AP tests but otherwise not bad. The music and arts programs are excellent and there are many electives to choose from.
Good school, good teachers. Lots of athletic opportunities and other clubs. Not a lot of diversity at the school, needs more people from different backgrounds. Lots of opportunities to take challenging classes, or courses of interest.
The work was very challenging and got me ready for college. The school was usually clean and safe feeling. Some of the staff and parents are rude and at times do not understand students or people that they are interacting with.
Homestead is very fun when it comes to sports and the classes, But the people is something that made my high school experience go downhill. Not only did I feel out of place all the time but sometimes I just felt unmotivated. I still enjoyed my 4 years in high school. The one place I felt I really belonged too this year was my soccer team. I love our team chemistry so much and hope the legacy of us seniors continue.
Homestead high school is a highly achieving, accepting, and diverse school that allows students to be and do the things they want to do.
There are a lot of course options and ways to create your own course, or request a new one as they are constantly evaluating the effectiveness of each class. Teachers support your growth and seem to really care for each student, there is a big emphasis on sports at Homestead. In my experience teachers and faculty will assume that you are on a path to go to college. Because of this, faculty encourage students to join clubs or create new ones in order to have a well rounded application. The college readiness support is definitely present, but AVID may be pushed too much that I have found my peers have been annoyed by the overemphasis of AVID practices at Homestead. Overall, the spirit from students seems to grow each year and students graduate Homestead with a love and admiration for the school as a whole.
Most of the kids are spoiled and stuck up, but there are definitely many students are are really great. Pretty cliquey, but there’s definitely friends for everyone. Many teachers are overworked and under-qualified, often stretching themselves too thin. Usually newer teachers struggle a lot. Overall the school spends a lot of money on sports teams, renovation, the arts, and upholding the Homestead image. There’s tons of extracurriculars so there really is something for everyone, but administration is lazy and only involved in things they know could go public. They have yet to address the issue of recycling bins being emptied into the trash, which has been an issue for almost a decade, as well as other issues.
I loved the education at Homestead. I really felt that whatever level anyone was at, they'd be met where they are to challenge themselves. However, the sense of community is not great. HHS is super cliquey and people tend to be passive.
Homestead prepared me academically for the rigors of college. I have opportunities to get involved in the community through volunteer work and classroom connections to local businesses. There were many opportunities to get involved in co-curriculars which helped make the high school experience enjoyable.
