I see Homestead High School as the balanced high school in the FUHSD district academically -- in my opinion, this is all for the better.

We have academic rigor, but it doesn't drive people to the point of insanity like Monta Vista High School and Lynbrook High School. People here have diverse interests and goals that aren't just variations of "Get a 4.0 GPA, do insane extra-curriculars, take tons of AP/Honors classes and get into a Top 20 institution", and students are generally friendly, easy going and definitely not neurotic. But we're no slackers, either; working hard here will still give you a great shot at universities like flagship UCs Los Angeles and Berkeley, Yale, Cornell, etc. Plus, no academic stress culture!

If you (or your child) are seeking a more normal, yet academically productive high school experience, this school and Fremont High School (in my opinion as a senior in the Class of 2019) are the places to be.

My overall experience at Homestead was positive! I felt like I was able to grow and learn and meet new people. However, I felt like the competitive academic nature of the school was sometimes overwhelming and witnessed many fail to succeed because of this.
The school has an extremely competitive environment, but the teachers are motivated in helping you along the way. One thing that could change is the school's tendency to make big changes without looking for student approval ratings. For example, the school recently changed its entire schedule, hoping to help students get more sleep through later start times. However, it seems this change has only caused negative outcomes when it comes to students' eating schedules and attention span during class periods (we have two block periods with no break, two days a week). Other than that, Homestead deserves its high-standing in public school ratings. There is a sense of community among the classes, the amounts of bullying are slim to none, and all of us are lucky to have this high education.
