HTM has been wonderful for our daughter who is self-motivated and naturally curious. While she was very successful at the Catholic school she attended before, we were concerned that the scope of her education was too narrow and that she was quickly losing her joy for learning. HTM has been a wonderful solution for our family and we’re looking forward to sending our second child.
A complete bait and switch. Promises of a kind environment and loving discipline but actually punitive (and shaming). Every single founding family has left. This is school is not what it used to be since moving to the new campus where everything is now all about money. A rush to diagnose children with “learning disabilities” so that families can pay $$ for more tutoring when none of the faculty have the appropriate credentials to make this diagnosis.
Very sweet preschool. In the upper grades, it seemed like a great school on the surface, but after several years there, many issues apparent, particularly in the older grades. I wish we had verified rather than just trusted our children were learning. I wish we had believed our children when they talked about all of the social dysfunction. There is a pervasive negative attitude of the staff about standardized testing, but objective measures of learning and state standards are not used. Compared to other Montessori schools in Nashville, really lacking in enrichment activities. While tuition was relatively lower here it quickly became annoying how much everything was a fundraiser and school was always pleading for money.
HTM provides a comprehensive and diverse course of study for very young children to middle schoolers. My family has experienced all levels as our children started as toddlers and will continue through their middle years. All staff is Montessori trained with appropriate certifications. Ms. Kate, Head of School, holds certifications in Montessori education, special education and general education. Teachers and students are challenged to be the best they can be. The school culture promotes good citizenship and respect. I always thought it was interesting that the children appeared so happy. It is clear from my experiences that as relaxed happy learners, HTM students succeed academically and socially.
Sending my children to HTM is my single biggest regret as a parent. No assessments and no accountability (and no clear credentials to be a teacher) have left us in the position of having to hire private tutors to get back to grade level so they can attend another school. Very few of the teachers are fully Montessori certified. Over the past year, many of the more senior experienced teachers have left and been replaced by new college graduates and the community of the school has shifted. Many of the programs advertised on the website such as music are not really offered any more.
