I read a review of this school on another site that called it a "sinking ship," and it really is. It used to be great. We stayed from preschool through half of elementary before it turned a dark corner. Preschool is great. There are a few excellent elementary teachers. But by the time 6th grade rolls around there are only a few students left. Every. Single. Year. It's become a very divisive community. A lot of talk about politics. If you aren't a political activist you'll have a hard time fitting in. They would rather students learn how to march in protests than learn to read properly. Diversity is NOT valued. They don't value diversity of beliefs or opinions. They don't value disability diversity. They host sessions where DEI specialists teach parents how racist they all are (even though HSH might be the most diverse private school in LA). It's all smoke and mirrors, and it's sad because while it was never a strong academic community, it used to be a nice place where kids were happy.
The Hollywood Schoolhouse is a hidden treasure in Hollywood. From the outside, it looks like this tiny school but once you walk through the doors, you realize you have encountered something special. I have had 2 children come through HSH (one is a current student). When my son entered in 1st grade he was welcomed with open arms and immediately connected with his teachers & his peers. My youngest started in preschool. There is truly something magical about the preschool.
HSH set my oldest up for success. Upon entering middle school he tested into Spanish 2 and Algebra. He was also placed in many honors classes. I credit HSH for preparing my son for the rigors of middle school.
Highlights:
The school is diverse and diversity is a priority not only in the student body but also in the staff.
The community is incredibly strong. From the many community wide events, to the buddy program, it is pretty impossible for one not feel a belonging to this community.

Hollywood Schoolhouse is the best place I could have ever imagined I would find for my son's nine years of early education. It was where we found a diverse community of students, faculty and parents that really felt like an extended family. As a working mother I often travelled, and it gave me an incredible amount of comfort knowing the teachers were kind and loving and truly knew all of our kids. I am incredibly thankful to remain part of this loving and inspiring place, and nearly 5 year later some of our closest friends are those we met at HSH. It is a truly special place.
Ten years at HSH shaped, nurtured, and provided an environment that instilled a love for learning and a space to explore, question, and grow. The school offers a community of teachers and administrators dedicated to your child’s success. It is student-centered and your child will be accepted and valued as an individual, and supported by teachers and students.
Each year at HSH was a new adventure in learning, friendships, encouragement, and achievements. At HSH, your child will, without a doubt, learn alongside bright, motivated, high achieving peers. HSH is also a community where students learn and understand the inherent dignity of the person, the uniqueness of their peers, and the motivation to look out for each other.

When our family moved from the East Coast 2 years ago, we did a lot of research on schools in a very short period of time, after narrowing it down to a few schools, it was very easy for us as a family to make a decision, HSH was by far the right choice and two years later it has filled all our expectations. Ms Ilise and Ms Lisa along with all the teachers and staff are amazing, they welcomed not only our children but also us into the community and made our transition to a new state a lot easier, knowing our children settled and were happy with their new school. When Covid broke out and online schooling began they did not miss a beat and HSH had the students on Zoom in no time, keeping up with the curriculum and schedule. Again eliminating stress when it matters for the children and their families. We are extremely happy with our choice and now that our eldest has graduated HSH she has been accepted by the number one Secondary School in California. We strongly recommend HSH!
Hollywood Schoolhouse is a wonderful combination of academic excellence and nurturing kindness. The approach to the emotional wellness of each student - promoting kindness and inclusion is what was most appealing to us when looking for a school for our son. The teachers, staff and administrators are all actively accessible. The community of parents is wonderful. It’s a fun environment for the kids and the parents alike. My son has developed deep and close friendships as have my husband and me. We feel lucky to be part of such a welcoming community.
HSH has been the scholastic home to both our sons, and we couldn't have hoped for a more nurturing, impressive education.
The school manages an incredibly difficult balancing act. It's academically rigorous, and always on the cutting edge of learning techniques. Yet it also prioritizes emotional development and kindness above all else.
It's diverse and welcoming, a true family... but that family extends beyond the school and its families, to the surrounding neighborhoods, the city... and further. It feels like the curriculum is designed not just to teach the important academic milestones, but also prepare the children to be a part of the bigger world. It encourages empathy in all matters, and we see it in our own kids every day.
The incredible staff manage to achieve all of the above with a sense of fun and a ton of humor. The last year has been incredibly difficult, but the sense of community in HSH has only grown stronger through it all. It's a brilliant, beautiful school.

The Hollywood schoolhouse is a close caring community that is staffed with excellent teachers and administrators. We had two children attend for the period from September 2005 through June 2019- both were there from Per K through 6th grade.
I have been at this school almost my whole life. It is such an amazing school to go to. The memories you will make will be endless and I really had such a great time going there. My only tiny problem was that I felt I wasn't being challenged enough in an academic term. But the teachers are great, so are the student(maybe one or two kinda annoying people though.) and the overall atmosphere is great. The best was our swimming classes every week!
