There are a lot of Hmong students there. I myself was Hmong too, but I would like to see more diversity and more races. I would love that HIA would do more diverse activities than just Hmong activities. However, there are many people of color that comes to the Hmong activities. I liked that we have new years show and the opportunity to perform on stage. When I was there, I really enjoy the fall dance (Homecoming). That was the only dance that we did during all my years at HIA. I really wish we did more of that. Compare to all the other middle school, the school was decent.
I came in 6th grade at the start of middle school. Since the school is called Hmong International Academy, I thought it was full of Hmong people but it’s not. It’s actually more diverse than other school. I liked the after school activities and the sports competition that we do every year. As well as being rewarded to go to valley fair every year for accomplishments.
This school felt like home for me. I didn't feel different; I didn't feel like an outsider. Everyone were like my brothers and sisters. I miss the experience and I wish to do it all over again.
The teachers are amazing. They understand how difficult things can get for us due to our culture. We learn to respect their values and they learn to respect ours.
It's straightforward and understandable .
During after school, this program from YWCA have 1 hour activIties for students of their interest like Girl Scout, arts and craft, Boy Scout, girls volleyball, acrobatics , Etc.
Although the majority are Hmong students , staff faculty are African Americans , Caucasian and Hmong. We learn to accept one another and acknowledge that we still learn to be respectful, be responsible, be safe and be our best.
