Hillel Yeshiva School Reviews
Rating 4.23 out of 5 13 reviews
This school has very good academics for people in High Honors/AP Classes. Unfortunately if you do not live in the area/do not come from that community they don’t really care about you. There is no late transportation so the non-local students can’t conveniently do any after school activities. The regular level classes are very hard to concentrate in because certain teachers cannot control the class and have people running around, talking, yelling, singing etc. As someone who was in both AP/HH and a few regular classes, i found the higher level classes to be much easier to focus for this reason. The after school groups are lacking as well. They only care about you if you do sports. No arts programs (besides a once a week art club) and the only academic team in College Bowl. Very good college guidance.
I liked that Hillel was a small school; each grade only had about 50 students so it was easy to form relationships with teachers and peers. I got an average education though, the english and history department is definitely lacking for students not enrolled in AP courses. I was prepared for college, but I feel there were certain aspects that should have been taught in high school that I am now learning on my own.
I found that the school prepared me well for my time in university. However, one thing I didn't appreciate, and that I would consider more of an issue with the students who attend, is the overall sense of exclusion felt by people who are outsiders to the community. While I understand that people in the SY community are very close with each other and have known each other since a very young age, it shouldn't be the reason why other kids attending Hillel High School should feel excluded. While this wasnt as bad in my grade as it was in others, I still feel as though it is an issue.
Academics: The teachers are pretty good. The problem, again, is that unless you are in the higher level classes, students will not take the classes as seriously and will always attempt to derail the teacher from the lesson plan for the day. I was in the higher-level classes, so this wasnt as prevalent as it was in other lower-level classes (from what i had heard), but it still exists, so just be aware.
