My opinion, Hillcrest has prepared me a lot. They offer you tutoring, internships, and etc. They try to help as many students as they can. It’s all up to the students on what they want to do with their life. My personal experience in Hillcrest has its ups and downs. I’m currently a AP and Honors student. When I first started high school they didn’t want me to have any honors classes, because it was to “full”. So through out my years I managed my classes. Though to me I felt I deserved to be in a more advanced class. So I spoke up and finally got what I wanted. In the end, I kept up in the classes and very proud to say it as well! I appreciate Hillcrest accepting my request and don’t regret it one bit.

The school environment is consistently hostile and antagonizing because the administration has little to no control over the students. There is never an effective response whenever the students get rowdy, which just emboldens them to act out even more. So much focus is placed on the sports department that it's to the detriment of everything else: the academic facilities are all obsolete, clubs are underfunded and lack basic equipment (not enough working instruments for the band for example). The only saving grace is the teachers, who always give their best despite the uphill battle they face. All in all, Hillcrest was a miserable experience that noticeably damaged my ability to connect with my peers.
Hillcrest is known for overachieving in athleticism and having a great band. Albeit, academics are very poor there are several teachers that just pass students without teaching them skills. The math and science department should be under heavy review. The average student doesn't graduate with knowledge of basic chemistry or algebra. Most top athletes that graduate requires to enroll in Jr colleges for failure to integrate into a college course. Most students require blow freshmen course once graduating into higher learning. The overall lack of requiring your students to demonstrate their knowledge is the biggest problem leaving them to understand they just need to show up to graduate. There is no diversity in Hillcrest it is very much a segregated school 98% of student body is African American. Although, there are some great teachers that work at hillcrest the push their students to learn, but it is overshadowed by the lack of support they get.
