Highland Academy Charter School is an excellent high school that promotes academic excellence by working at your own pace. The educators ensure that students have opportunities to excel in school by providing a variety of learning approaches as well as one-on-one instruction. Highland Academy is more than an academic facility, it is a strongly-knit community of supportive and brilliant individuals. Students are sure to be respected and heard within a small student body that makes up Highland Academy. Not only are students educated in the school district's curriculum, they are educated in the ways of life: sewing, gardening, sustainable living, budgeting and money management, goal tracking, conflict resolution, and stress management are just a few of the life skills that Highland Academy focuses on developing in the fortunate students who choose to attend this unique school.

I loved the different approach to learning that they incorporated. Instead of textbooks, they had us do memorable projects, such as skits, models, fake economy and so on. I do wish however that they had more sports involved, the only one that was offered when I was attending was archery as far as I'm aware of. It was great but I just wish there was more variety.
I participated in a lot. Student government, yearbook, engineering design competitions, book club, variety/talent show, prom/dance committee, and even a Dungeons and Dragons club. I focused on getting involved and utilizing those resources to get credit for classes! I loved being a part of whatever I could, and I enjoyed it all.

However, not all students think that they have the smarts, the time, or the ability to participate in these extracurricular activities. This may have changed since I graduated.

The current administration is super excited to help students get involved in their academics, and prioritizes students being involved in the creation of extracurriculars. Previous administration has either been in total support of student-led events and activities, or not at all. I have experienced both of these types of administration, and the latter, obviously, is highly frustrating.

But overall, extracurriculars are commonly student created and led. There are a wide variety of things to do, and if you don't see something you want to do, make it happen! The resources exist to start any type of club, activity, fundraiser, or other activity that you want to do.
