I’m so happy I transferred and found Highland Prep, so much better than my old high school. Highland prep is the perfect amount of challenge and hands on learning. I wasn’t used to a smaller school but now I feel like I can get more individual help. I want to study Engineering so being at a STEM prep was really cool for me too. amazing teachers, helpful administration, the only thing that sucks is the drive there. Worth it though!
As a student that attended Highland Prep Surprise for four years, I would like to speak out about the relaxed grading system and lack of motivation for students to pass. Instead, this school forces its students to get at least a grade above a C in order to keep their academic statistics high. As well as going through many other forced rules in order to keep their school looking like it is a step above all others but in reality, is just a high school that fakes their grades and other stats they throw out. I feel like the only benefit was being able to graduate with close to if not past 30 credits, but this school is in its beginning phases after being open for close to 5 years which affects the students the most. Instead of feeling like a place to inspire learning and keep us aspiring for college, it feels more like a federal prison for kindergartners run by mostly mediocre staff members with no respect or care for the students (minus the select few staff members).
Only three stars because it used to be a good school. The first three years there I had a great time and everyone, the teachers and students, were nice. However, once senior year came it felt like I was back in elementary. I had no sense of freedom, the admin constantly breathing down both the teacher's and student's necks, and rules to just micromanage the teachers and students. The school also markets itself as a college prep school when really they just force you to apply to college and that's all the prep you get. They don't guide you for scholarships or even prep you at all. The best thing they offer is high-end classes that will save you money. However they also force you to take the AP exams or they'll fail you and you can't choose any of your classes unlike a normal public school.
