HSMSE has really treated me well. I care deeply about my schoolwork, and I feel that I am deeply challenged, while still having time to do extracurriculars like obtain an internship or join a varsity sports team. If you're like me and know you will prioritize your schoolwork, MSE may be right for you. The A- and B-day schedule (i.e. we have half of our classes one day and then the other half the next) makes it very easy to balance school, extracurriculars, and a social life, as long as you make sure to get your work done. I am a senior in the Engineering track, which has really helped me strengthen my engineering and problem-solving skills for college.
HSMSE is a good school, I feel prepared for college and it has taught me a lot. However, I do feel like some teachers don’t care as much as they should or don’t treat us as well as they should. Good things about our school however, is that the location provides us with a lot of places to get food during lunch and we are able to use City College’s facilities including the quad! The academics are really good and the classes that are provided are very diverse as well.
The tight knit community that revolves around kindness and shared intellectual power is unrivaled at this elite specialized high school. The students have so much knowledge to share with one another, and the teachers employ a powerful teaching method with emphasis on intellectual discovery and high-level challenges for their students. It is truly a unique school and I would have rather attended no other school in NYC.
