From High Mowing School

Home to about 250 students in Preschool through Grade 12, our school is small. Yet it is not our size that matters most, but the principles upon which our school was founded and the values that inspire and inform our curriculum and our work with students. In our rapidly evolving world where speed and conflict seem to predominate, we believe in and stand for perennial values. We believe children deserve the fullness of their childhood. We believe students’ capacities should be patiently nurtured. We believe that each individual child has a unique destiny to fulfill and that as educators we are in service to their intention. We believe that human beings hold a special place and commensurate responsibility in the world, and we strive to guide students through the discovery, appreciation, and care for every aspect of being human.

Over twenty years after graduating from High Mowing, I find the community of the school as strong as ever, carrying on rich traditions with a diverse international and multicultural group of students. The campus, already unparalleled for natural beauty on its pastoral New England hilltop, continues to grow, the faculty and staff continue to impress in experience and dedication, and I continue to be amazed by quality of the students that High Mowing graduates year after year.

Young people with aspirations in the arts, liberal arts, sciences, technology, and business benefit from the flexibility of the curriculum and resources available to pursue studies in these areas virtually without limitation. The school has expanded, and is now offering pre-K through twelfth grade, and has launched myriad new educational, artistic, and athletic programs in recent years. I'm envious of the young people attending High Mowing today!

High Mowing School is an amazing place! My daughter received an outstanding education here, not just academically, but socially as well. The teaching methods truly support each young person to learn to think for themselves, find their place in the world, and discover who they want to be. The student community is very welcoming to all, and I can't count how many times I heard the phrase 'HMS is home' during this graduation weekend! I am so glad she found High Mowing.
Just today I heard an author, David Epstein, say "breadth of training predicts breadth of transfer," by which he meant "the more ways you learn something, the more able you are to apply that learning to new, untried areas." At High Mowing School, our children learned math and other basic skills in multiple ways—through movement, music, art, outdoor studies and more, on *top* of classroom lessons. They don't just *know* things (because you can know things by rote memorization and drills). High Mowing students *understand* things. Understanding enables people to apply their knowledge in novel situations. As a result, we feel our children are better prepared for the decades to come, when their world is likely to be very different from what we inhabit now.
