High Mountain Institute Reviews

My time at HMI was the best 4 months of my life. I came to HMI with no backpacking experience, but I became very skilled at things like packing a pack, backcountry cooking, and navigation. The expeditions were some of my favorite parts of HMI, and we went to insane places. The classes were academically rigorous, but the teachers genuinely care about you. Your teachers are like your friends, you call them by their first names and have many outside-of-class interactions with them. At HMI, there are also apprentices who are fresh out of college and lead your cabin as well as helping in classes. However, my favorite part of my time here was the bonds I formed with my semester. It was like having 48 new best friends, and each person cares about everyone else so much. You could walk into the main building crying and no one would judge or ask questions, just comfort you. We did so many fun, student-planned activities together so there was never a dull moment on campus. I highly recommend!
