Heritage High School is a large school with many programs and connections. Our enthusiastic Husky Hooligans make every game supporting our football/soccer/etc teams a highlight of the year. Our teams have won many titles; our Women's Soccer Team even won the state championship in 2019. The facilities at Heritage are generally well-maintained and clean. Academically, the quality of teacher depends on where you look. The majority do their jobs and are pretty good. There are several teachers that are notorious for their lack of respect and harshness towards students. On the other end of the spectrum, many teachers go above and beyond, forming personal bonds and going out of their way to support students. Our theatre program is easily the best in the area, and is one of the things Heritage is known for. Career readiness outreach programs and the wide range of clubs allow students to get connected in many ways. Go Huskies!
HHS has fairly decent facilities and classes, though the quality of classes dropped dramatically in my junior year as online school was extremely poorly executed overall. I feel that the school culture is somewhat inclusive of students with intersectional backgrounds, though it does a truly upsetting job by enabling bigotry at every level, from students to teachers to administrators. Hate symbols are a constant part of the experience, everywhere from graffiti to the more profoundly ignorant of student's clothing choices. This in mind, administration exclusively dress codes femme-presenting students over absurd violations. One area in which this school excels is that the typical class is somewhat lax on grading in such a way as to encourage growth. I believe this is emblematic of a shift towards an evolved understanding of the relationship between rigor and learning that emphasizes the latter.
Heritage High School has been like a home for the past 4 years of my academic life. It has provided me with rigorous classes, outstanding athletics programs, and genuine teachers. Even in the midst of a pandemic, I'm left in awe of what Heritage has done for their students and faculty. They continue to provide opportunities for students who struggle academically and financially by volunteering their time outside of school. One thing I would change about Heritage is the pressure they put on rigorous classes like AP or honors courses. There are students whose mental health is strongly affected by the courses they take. Not being able to switch into a less rigorous class, after being enrolled in a high rigor course, leaves students stressed, without free time, and under pressure. A student's academic well-being and extracurricular well-being is key to success. I am very grateful for the opportunities Heritage has provided for me.
