Many of the previous reviews of Henderson are glowing. I can't seem to wrap my head around this fact. If you aren't talented in athletics or music, good luck getting involved here and finding friends. As someone who originally isn't from West Chester, the student body is less than welcoming. Most of these students have known each other since kindergarten, practically their entire lives. Arriving as a freshman at Henderson was an alienating experience. If you don't know anyone, you shouldn't plan on knowing anyone. Many of the students in their tight-knit circles don't care to socialize with anyone but those they already are familiar with. Academically, Henderson is mediocre. Many of the math teachers are less than stellar at explaining concepts, and the science department is also lacking. Electives for students are slim and cater to students with musical and art interests. As a senior looking back on my time at Henderson, I wish I had the opportunity to attend a different school.
Henderson challenges students to get them to reach their full potential. After relocating to Pennsylvania, I entered my sophomore year thinking it would be difficult to make friends since people already had friend groups from the previous year. But many students were very welcoming. The counselors and administrators helped me find people and clubs that fostered getting to know others. Teachers get students the help they need. If you ask, they will do their best to help you. Everyone's experience is different in terms of grades and college readiness, but overall, alumni have said that Henderson prepared them well. Diversity is definitely an issue for me, but I don’t believe it’s the school’s fault. We have clubs like the Jewish Student Union and Black Student Union, however I still feel underrepresented in many ways and faced or witnessed many racial injustices. The staff work hard to avoid this from happening and support minority students.
I have enjoyed my time at Henderson High School, and I have been appropriately challenged with Accelerated Honors and AP courses. Henderson boasts a great music program, with large student involvement, wonderful directors, and talent. Also, many sports team rank high in PIAA championships. There are numerous opportunities for involvement with clubs and extracurricular activities, including many community service organizations like the Andrew L Hicks, Jr. Foundation, which helps support and mentor children in the city of Chester. All around, a great school.
