Helios School Reviews

2 reviews
Helios is an amazing progressive school for gifted children. It has a rich project-based curriculum with a strong SEL component that incorporates environmental and social justice issues. There is nearly no homework in the lower grades, and only light homework in middle school. The little homework they do have is never repetitive, and is assigned only as needed. They do not use grades at all which takes the focus off of getting a "good grade" and puts it back on real learning. Kids are more likely to choose interesting/challenging topics when there is no pressure to get a good grade.

It is so wonderful to have a school where gifted kids feel "normal." Our child is so fortunate to be able to avoid the "nerd" label (and corresponding isolation/bullying) that many gifted kids face in American schools which is very detrimental to their self-esteem. At Helios our child feels safe to be herself, fits in with her peers, has developed many friendships, and has maintained high self-esteem.

Students get away with terrible behavior because they are (supposedly) gifted and are given free rein. Majority are special needs. Teachers of varying abilities come and go. High employee turnover. Academics not emphasized. Facilities desperately need updating. No green space. No cafeteria. No teacher lounge.
