My daughters have been at HRS since Kindergarten - and they are now finishing 5th & 7th grade. Overall, we love the school. The academics in the lower school are strong - but what really puts this school ahead in my mind is the focus on creating good humans. The classes are incredibly diverse - meaning the kids are learning to embrace diversity - it is integrated into the curriculum and everything they do. There is a strong focus on the social and emotional health of the children. They learn to understand their feelings and are given a toolbox to engage in each experience. There was a significant uptick in the academic rigor in middle school, while still maintaining the focus on being well rounded. The kids are encouraged to be curious and think deeply about topics. The school is still working through a recent system / communication change, which has created some confusion in the parent body. I hope to see this improved as we work through the transition.
As a current high school student, I can say with full confidence that this school will test your limits every year. Under the HS principal, Ricky Lapidus, the teachers have shown care for their students and have put a MASSIVE effort towards diversity and highlighting the experiences of minority groups.
The teachers are overall good, but in HS give an incredibly large amount of homework. Especially in 11th grade, you will have almost no life outside of school. Some stand-out teachers are: Mr. Von, Ms. Sparks, Ms. Brown, and Mr. Taylor in middle school and Mr. Schneider, Ms. Guzman, Mr. VonK, & Naoko in the high school.
If you are looking for a school with a lot of relationships and dating, this is not the school. While there are some couples, most students are too busy with school work and sports/clubs.
Head-Royce is also an extremely liberal school. If you love to work and thrive in stress then you will love Head-Royce. If you want a more "normal" HS experience, don't go here!

My daughter has had an outstanding high school experience at Head-Royce - I can't imagine a better school for her. I remember thinking, at my initial parent tour, what a remarkably smart, involved, caring, switched on group of adults running this school and inspiring and supporting the kids - this first impression was spot on. The teachers, administrators, deans, advisors, counselors, librarians, etc are superb. The overall vibe of the kids seems great too - lively and fun but also really bright, hardworking and engaged. Go Jayhawks!
