As a parent I am exceptionally happy with Hargrave. They teach so much more than just academics. They have many fine academic offerings in my opinion and opportunities for advanced placement as well. The teachers have a genuine interest in helping the boys achieve their very best academically. There is lots of extra help available if you need it as well. We are happy with the time management techniques they are teaching our son. Responsibilities and following rules are emphasized daily. We feel it really prepares our son for the real world. You will not be coddled here, but given fair expectations and be expected to do it. A's are not handed out here as the grading scale is slightly higher than most schools so when you get an A you can really be proud of your accomplishment and understanding of the subject matter. We are very pleased with the athletics that they offer and are highly impressed with how they manage to keep all the boys active and busy.
Hargrave Military Academy was exactly what I needed. I had spent my time at other High Schools in Charlotte, NC area. At first when my mom took me up there for a visit I really didn't like it. There were no girls. Its was an all boys boarding school. And it was military at that. Well to say the least I was not happy when I was told that I would be spending my sophomore year there. To make a long story short, being there prepared me for college and life afterwards. They taught me discipline. They taught me responsibilities, They taught me how to study. And they taught me how to respect others. Those 3 years allowed me grow up. My mom was not there to wash my clothes, feed me and tell me to study all those things I had to learn on my own. The school is in a small little town, so going out on weekends was totally out. But I played on the sports team so I was gone on the weekends. All in all it was the best place for at that time to turn me into a responsible young man
Hargrave has turned a corner this past year. They have painted two barracks, bought new furniture, upgraded their strength and conditioning facility to rival colleges and have hired some great teachers and coaches. They are really investing in the school's future to include their Academic Learning Center that provides great capabilities to extend the learning experience to cadets. My son is uber excited to attend this fall.
