Despite a majority of the teachers being supportive and really taking the time to know their students, the guidance within Haldane has really lacked engagement with the student body. I felt clueless when it came to my application for college except for making my account, and whenever I was under emotional distress I was lucky if I had five minutes with the counselor. The food here isn't amazing because of the low budget the lunch ladies are given, there are too many cliques, and overall the Haldane experience can quickly become lonely, even when you look forward to your classes. I appreciated tenth period and the time teachers took to get to know you, but the only thing I miss about Haldane is the scenic views. The student body lacks diversity, and the biggest of problems can be created from the smallest of things. Despite positive experiences with most teachers I feel that some acted like students themselves, quickly becoming passive aggressive and snarky towards kids. Do better.
Being a person of color at a predominately white school honestly made me feel very unwelcomed and dealt with racism and homophobia. If you are a person of color, I would kinda reconsider. The education system is very good, but the diversity is not there. I was often called racial slurs, made fun of because I looked "different", even though Haldane is considered a "Liberal school". With that being said, if you are a person of color, try to find a school that is more diverse. SO PLEASEEEE IF YOU ARE BLACK, HISPANIC, OR JUST A MINORITY PLEASE RETHINK because the school doesn't really take racism seriously.
Overall I have had a great experience at Haldane High School! I feel like they have prepared me for college in the best way possible. If it wasn’t for them, my grades would not be as good as they are now. One thing Haldane could improve on is helping us get a little more information about scholarships.
