Hakipuu Learning Center is an alternative public charter school. Instead of a traditional public high school that works with grades and a GPA. Hakipuu works with credits and standards. Meaning that students do not pass their grade level with an A or B. A student at Hakipuu has to earn 10 credits a year in order to pass their grade level. You get these credits by doing projects in the area where you need credit. For example, if you need science credit you do science project. It is a project based school that teaches its students valuable life lessons. That school taught me about being independent, respect, responsibility, how to be humble, what it means to be apart of something bigger, and much more life lessons that i will cherish and pass on.
I love that this school is untraditional in that it doesn't keep students in a classroom for 6 hours learning about things that they won't personally use in their future careers. Hakipu'u Learning Center is a public, project based charter school located in Kaneohe Hawaii. The unique curriculum allows students to venture out and choose topics of his or her own interest and create projects based on their interests that correlate with specific academic standards that our school provides. For example, If one wanted to learn more about surfing or all the student wanted to do was surf, They are able to create a student driven project with certain questions they they would want to know about surfing wether it be about the science behind waves, math about measuring waves or even creating their own surf board. each question or few questions will help achieve a certain academic standard the same as, if not, similar to the same standards traditional DOE schools provide such as math, science, english, art, visual art...ect and gain school credit that way. However, as a public school partially funded by the DOE we are required to have specific advisor-taught classes such as english and math. But just like the student driven projects, these classes are taught as staff driven projects where the teachers choose the questions and standers that we are required to have in our projects.
