I have been a student at Arete since this school opened since I was in fifth grade, and I am now in my senior year. Arete prepares its students very well for college, and it has amazing college counseling services with one-on-one support. Arete is a very challenging school, but the teachers are always available to help. Arete and the entire Great Hearts Network do need to work on the diversity on campus. Arete is lacking in diversity not only in its student's race and religion but also diversity in the texts that are read. Which in my opinion these texts could also be the reason why there is a lack of diversity in race, religion, and sexuality. Arete has an amazing community, but Arete's community could be so much greater if it was diverse.
It's an incredible liberal arts education that focuses on the content of a person and guides the students on a beautiful journey of questioning the world, through seminars on the Great philosophers and writers from Aristotle to Malcolm X, and even leads us through geometric investigations every quarter. However, this school does have difficulty staying with the times, which can lead to feelings of exclusion and complacency. Overall, though, it's a stimulating and rigorous curriculum that prepares us for the future and the world ahead masterfully.
I love how with this curriculum, we are able to learn more about the “why” behind things. This is present in almost every class, examples being the socratic seminars we have, or the way we go about learning math through exeter, and the labs we do in science, etc. This allows us to grasp a deeper and more meaningful understanding of various topics. And we are also able to establish a better relationship with our teachers because of it, but also due to the small class sizes and which teachers they hire. I just wish we had more opportunities to chose which classes we can take as well as a greater variety of classes to chose from.
