I have been a student at Veritas for 9 years now, and I have had ups and downs with this school. The courses are incredibly challenging, since every class is an honors level class. This can be wonderful if you excel in a subject, but oftentimes students fall behind in some of the more advanced courses. The school strongly states that "grades don't matter" which, while a nice idea, makes it difficult to keep a GPA where you want it to be. Charter schools in Arizona cannot be religious, but Veritas has a very Catholic community, so many lessons revolve around a Christian viewpoint of the world. The school has had several controversies around transgender students, so be advised that no trans student will be permitted to use their bathroom of choice or join the sports team of their preferred gender.
My experience at Veritas was good according to the curriculum but according to teachers wanting students to learn there isn’t a lot of leniency, students are rarely allowed to correct work and get sufficient points for their work. It’s more about the grade than it is about the learning. Teachers don’t reach out to students to notify them about their struggles until it’s too late and they get a deficiency. The faculty always says it isn’t about the grade but in the end that information is misleading and the student by the end of the quarter has a grade that will effect their future and college. The curriculum is flawless and amazing but for the humane letters classes, some of the teachers don’t Know how to effectively teach it. And when it comes to students controversial opinions they are immediately shut down. The mock trial program is great. The sports are great as well, there are certain sports that get favored more than others. The curriculum was my favorite part.
I liked the small classroom size, and how accessible the teachers are. Graduating from Veritas I appreciate all of the relationships that I made with my teachers, and how they all inspired me. Despite this, Veritas was not flexible at all with my sports schedule, however they were flexible with other students school sports schedule. The amount of stress and pressure that was placed on us was extremely difficult to handle. I felt like I was not smart enough or didn't work hard enough. You were expected to be great and you were expected to be at a high level of thinking. The senior thesis project gave me a good sense of satisfaction when I completed my defense, however the process of creating was stressful, and I did not enjoy it.
