I would rate Graham Kapowsin a 3/5 stars. I am choosing this rating because overall the education is mostly good, but the community and staff are horrible. There are constant fights, students are always in fear, and the school will do nothing about it. On top of that, there are select few teachers that do not teach properly and the school disregards this. However, there are also a few extremely great teachers! The staff such as the office staff are also not that great. Given I can understand this as they have to deal with teens all day, however, they should not be in an office position that allows them to mistreat or disrespect the students. They can be rude and often abrasive to students. A perfect example of this would be the recent beating of an autistic student. He didn't fight back, but the school attempted to suspend him even though he was a victim. They claimed he participated in the fight even though he was simply putting his belongings down to keep them safe. 3/5 stars.
While the school faculty/students had a lot of school spirit, the school did not give the students a lot of room to choose their classes. Specifically, the first opportunity to take an AP class--without a specific recommendation from a teacher--was for AP World History during Sophomore year. This compromises applications to Colleges because of the lack of an advanced courseload. Colleges want to take students who take challenging classes and show proficiency. This clearly puts students at this at a disadvantage when the majority of students only had access to 1 AP class for half of their high school career. Also, history classes only became available after freshman year. So they were additionally at a disadvantage from the gap year, where they most likely would forget the history they learned from years prior. However, the school did have very kind and intelligent teachers, who in Honors and AP, taught a challenging curriculum. The Art Department was very talented!
My experience throughout the 4 years I have attended Graham Kapowsin high school has been great. Graham Kapowsin high-school has its problems like any other school, that including , behavioral issues, monetary issues and very rarely administration issues but this school is by no means dangerous or “ghetto”in the most recent years some of the students who attend or have attended in the past have given the school a bad reputation. Coming from a senior that has been attending since 2019, I can say that the teachers and adults in this school do have the students best interest in heart and those who don’t have the best interest of the students, aren’t bad teachers by any means. Gk certainly hosts a unique community but it is a community nonetheless. Problems? yes. Terrible? not by any means. Great school? debatable. Room for positive growth and change? absolutely.
