Coming from public school, Gould gives me a completely new environment to learn in. What's always struck me as the biggest difference is the environment- everyone is genuinely helpful and polite, and there is a culture of genuine respect that's helped me focus on my education. Other than SATs and ACTs and other college admissions tests, there is no standardized curriculum or testing, so the departments work to create their own curriculum based on students' performances in past years. Experiential learning has a big place, and classes will often cross over or connect between subjects and teachers. Academic subjects are presented in ways appropriate to modern culture and society, and students are encouraged to have active discussions in relatively small classroom settings. The school is a bit limited in opportunities for clubs and groups because of its small size (at least compared to most public schools), but there are definitely some of those opportunities there.

Gould Academy is a private school in Bethel, Maine. Students from around the world attend this school as well as many local residents. It offers a four point program where students travel internationally in their first year, do arts and volunteer work in their second year, go on a nine day winter camping trip in their third year, and do an independent study in their fourth year. The school offers a wide diversity of academic classes, has a wonderful music program, and has and an active sports program including competitive downhill and nordic skiing
Fantastic athletics. Gould believes that athletics are integral to students' development, so most exams that cannot be taken due to athletic obligations can be made up later. I was able to keep my grades up and be a varsity-level cross-country runner, cross-country skier, and cyclist at Gould. I am now in college and excelling academically, but my school is very rigid about exam scheduling and I have trouble balancing my extracurriculars with my academics. I wish I could go back!
