My son has been at Good Shepherd for three years and we've been very happy. He has had made great friends in the small classes, and gets plenty of attention from the dedicated teaching staff. He also loves the "perks" like the outdoors program, where they walk over to nearby Forest Hill park and down by the James River to learn about nature and Richmond. We also like that, even though it's small, there kids from all kinds of different backgrounds, which was different from what we found in a lot of the other schools we looked at.

Our daughter was very young for her grade, pretty introverted and cautious, but we knew she was so eager to start school. In this environment she has thrived and grown into an incredible little person. She has developed such a BIG appreciation for her community and the environment because of the wholistic education at this school. They teach math lessons at the park, science lessons at the river, and lessons of being a good citizens throughout the community. They let a CHILD be a CHILD and focus less on testing and more on confidence, cooperation and compassion. <3 It is a place of peace, imagination and zero bullying/cliques/status competitions. They pair up students in upper grades with younger ones to foster a community of helping, teaching and guiding.
The previous reviews were not very accurate. The school is fairly balanced between males and females, unlike the data shown. Our daughter refers to GSES as being her home, which speaks to the efforts of staff members to create a space where all children can excel. The small school model is excellent and affords the children a chance to know each other regardless of grade level. There are many activities, events, field trips and performances (by students and visiting groups) throughout the year. The lunch program is better than any other school's program. No fast food junk here. This school should be on every parent's look list!
