My experience here at Global Experience Magnet School was a unique one. I am very grateful for it because it has taught how to be a global citizen and the importance of making the world my classroom. I have been attending this school since 6th grade and since then have been to China twice. Not many people can say that! The curriculum is difficult, but help a lot with college readiness. This school is great for middle schoolers but I can't say the same for High Schoolers. There's no sports or after school activities (unless one is apart of student government or NHS). The only three special classes are art, technology, and gym. Though academics and traveling experience is great, there is a lacking when it comes to that High School experience, it can make students feel isolated from all other schools.
I am coming up on my last year at GEMS! After being here for 6 years, I can truly appreciate the opportunities that have been presented to me and that I have been able to utilize; traveling is a very large component of our school and I have been to China, France, Peru and many other national trips! All amazing experiences.
In eighth grade, I was fortunate enough to win a spot in the regional school choice lottery, getting me admission into the perfect secondary program for my interests, Global Experience Magnet School, GEMS for short. Part of the mission of my school is that students must “demonstrate a clear understanding of the world around them particularly as it relates to community involvement”.
GEMS provides true learning experiences for students in middle and high school to incorporate their mission through travel experiences, with a focus on service. I have been privileged to visit and volunteer in wonderful places both nationally and internationally, including Habitat for Humanity in Hawaii, Americorps in Louisiana, and volunteering with students in China. All of these experiences have given me a better understanding of the world, but have also stoked the embers of my passion for seeing the world.
