From Gilman School

Founded in 1897 as the nation's first country day school, Gilman School is a K-12 private independent day school for boys. Our mission is to unlock the greatness within each boy by educating the entire boy—mind, body, and spirit.

Our pursuit of excellence in all we do, our rich and comprehensive program, our immeasurably talented and interesting faculty and students, and our belief in the character traits embodied by the Gilman Five—Honor, Integrity, Respect, Humility, and Excellence—form the foundation of a school dedicated to helping boys of promise grow into men of character.

Gilman gets boys! Across all levels, lower, middle and upper school, the teachers, administrators and staff understand and relate to the boys. I have been particularly impressed with how they help to develop boys into independent, confident, honorable young men. My boys have been challenged and pushed to strive to be better in academics, sports, leadership and other areas. The school continually pushes itself as an institution to better itself - stay on top of changes in education, changes in the way boys learn - constantly wanting to improve itself. It turns to parents, to the community, to its alums to find the answers. Setting an example of being a leader for their own students.

Gilman’s greatest strength lies in its faculty and administration. They all teach. They all coach. They all mentor. They all truly care about their students. They rise them up. Teachers are always accessible to students. and they, themselves, are continually learning and developing to better serve their students. Gilman is an amazing place.

As a parent of three very different boys, I’ve seen how each has found a home at Gilman with unique activities, classes, and vastly differing groups of friends. The student body is diverse (socio-economically and racially more so than other private schools in Maryland), but the commonality is that the students are all intelligent and intellectually curious.
Gilman is a motivated community! In the past five years, they have made substantial efforts to improve the beauty of the campus and the experience for the boys who attend. With the addition of geographically diverse and young faculty, they have been able to connect traditional learning values with the new generation. Historically, Gilman has been one of the best private boys school on the east coast. Today, they continue the legacy of excellence in all that they do.
