I really like Gibson Ek, but for some reason, there are a lot of students who are kind of bigoted. But there are also a LOT of students who are very accepting (huge LGBT community in the school). I didn't expect to feel safe enough to come out as trans at Gibson Ek, but I did. However, I've also faced some harassment from other students (as well as just overhearing how much they don't respect people like me).

The learning style is kind of a mixed bag for me. I like being able to study what I'm interested in and make projects around that, but it can be hard to think of projects to get competencies that you don't have any interest in.

The teachers/advisors are great. I'm sad to see that so many of them left this year!

Gibson Ek is a big picture high school, making the learning experience quite different from a typical school. The school is fairly small, with a population of only 200 students. Because of this, students have a much more personal relationship with the teachers. The teachers, or "advisors", are truly able to understand and support the students. Students also have to get internships, which has been incredibly helpful in learning how to advocate for ones self. If a student wants an internship, they have to be incredibly persistent but professional. Getting to work in a professional environment and having to send out emails for communication prepares them for the workforce in a very real but engaging way. Possibly the best part about Gibson Ek though, is that students are able to learn about subjects that they are passionate about. Because of this, there are many students who have done incredible projects, like create and run an app, or build a chicken coop.
Gibson Ek High School is a great school that allows students to do project-based learning. The staff members, mentors, and other students are very nice to help and make suggestions on our projects, internships, college essays, etc... This school also gives a unique opportunity for students to go to real-world internships, which is a great practice for students on what working at a business is like. I love the fact that students get to learn what they want to learn and see the evolution of their final product. Overall, Gibson Ek High School is a great high school for project-based learning.
