From Georgetown Preparatory School

Georgetown Prep is part of a rich heritage of Jesuit education – one that began in 1789 when Archbishop John Carroll, the first bishop of Baltimore, founded his Academy on the Patowmack.

Since then, the vision for Jesuit education has expanded and is now shared by more than 50 other Jesuit high schools in the United States.

As a Catholic school, Prep helps young men to grow in their faith and understanding of the teachings of the Church and to learn to put their faith into action in the service of others. We welcome students of all faiths, believing that conscious reflection on one’s faith, whatever it may be, leads to spiritual maturity and a commitment to serve others.

Jesuit education centers on the education of the whole person: mind, spirit and body. This is accomplished through cura personalis (Latin for personalized care and concern for the individual) and through a holistic curriculum.

Despite the nonsensical politics of a private institution, the school offers much to its students physically, emotionally and spiritually. With a phenomenal residential program and a faculty that will push you to be your best as you discover yourself, Georgetown Prep creates an environment where students can mature academically and as a people. Undoubtedly, students who attend this institution will be well-prepared for any university, but will also be nurtured to be men for and with others.

There are several pros associated with this school: instilling a sense of purpose and becoming "Men for Others," is of utmost importance. Students are academically challenged from the start. The campus is incredible, facilities immaculate, and the history of the school is incredibly rich. I also really enjoyed the religious element; I most enjoyed "World Religions," where I learned about inclusivity and open-mindedness through carefully studying and understanding other religious systems and beliefs. The one negative for me was how conservative and non-diverse the school is; you will experience your fair share of rich kids. Your typical kid at Prep will spout whatever political/religious jargon their well-off parents spewed at home, without thinking about it critically and how policies/actions will affect "normal" people -- which can become quite hypocritical, given the school's motto: "Men for Others." Students of varying income levels and backgrounds need to be better incorporated.
Georgetown Prep has been a transforming experience for our son. The school philosophy of "Men for Others" has been evidenced by academic rigor, community involvement and diversity of thought, religion, race and creed. The Jesuit teachings are evident in daily living. Additionally, the sports programs and extra-curricular activities are nationally recognized. The focus of the school is on individual growth and personal best.
