I have really been impressed with everything about HYSA. I have never once felt that a decision was made with anything but the best interests of the kids in mind. The teachers are really creative, nurturing and thoughtful about instruction. I like that they are associated with the university and have a focus on innovation and trying new things to advance their goals. There is a lot of interaction with the school and community/parents. The kids aren't competitive with one another but realize that each has their own unique strengths. And they have a lot of opportunities to show off their talents with Musical Interlude Programs, plays, and any number of after school clubs. They have a great community of scholars with high expectations from the kids while at the same time nurturing friendships, having fun, and recognizing the importance of social and emotional needs. Best decision our family has ever made for our child.

My child is 14 1/2. She has been in various “academically gifted” programs in several states since 2nd grade. She entered HYSA in fall 2019 after finishing 7th grade in a gifted program at an AZ charter school. There is a night and day difference between the quality of teaching at HYSA versus anything we have experienced previously. HYSA has an exceptional staff and approach to teaching gifted students. In 1 1/2 years, my daughter has progressed through Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. She is about to start (01/21) Pre-Calculus. She is taking Spanish 2 and has achieved far greater fluency than I achieved in four years of high school or what I have seen in others. She is challenged but supported by her teachers and her classmates. There are drawbacks to a small school - particularly if your child is focused on HS team sports (football, basketball, cheer,...) but for our family the academic richness and focus on quality education completely offset the drawbacks of a small school.
